Tuning: What It Can and Cannot Do

Written by the PickupChain team · Last reviewed October 17, 2026

A handheld programmer or tuner changes engine and transmission settings: fuel, timing, shift points and, on turbo engines, boost. On turbocharged trucks the gains can be significant. Tuners also recalibrate the speedometer after a tire size change and can adjust idle and shift firmness.

Throttle controllers only change how quickly the pedal responds. The truck feels faster, but engine output does not change. They are a simple, reversible plug-in option.

Tuning can affect your powertrain warranty and emissions compliance. Look for tunes and parts that are legal in your state, especially in California and other CARB states, and save your stock file so you can return to factory settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

+Will a tuner void my warranty?

A dealer can deny a powertrain claim if the tune caused the failure. Many owners return to the stock tune before service. Some manufacturers offer their own warranty-friendly performance calibrations.

+Can a tuner fix my speedometer after bigger tires?

Yes. Most programmers let you enter the new tire diameter, which corrects the speedometer, odometer and shift points.

+Throttle controller or tuner?

A throttle controller only sharpens pedal response. A tuner changes actual engine settings and can add power and improve shifting. For real gains, a tuner is the choice.
