Intake and Fuel: Clean Air, Steady Fuel

Written by the PickupChain team · Last reviewed October 17, 2026

Cold air intakes replace the factory airbox with a less restrictive design and usually a reusable filter. Expect a sharper intake sound and a modest power gain. The biggest benefit is often easier maintenance with a washable filter.

Fuel system parts are about reliability. A weak fuel pump causes hard starts, hesitation under load and stalling. Clogged injectors cause rough idle and misfires. On diesels, fuel filters are a critical maintenance item that protects expensive injection components.

If you drive on dusty roads, choose a high-capacity filter and check it more often. Over-oiling reusable cotton filters can contaminate the mass air flow sensor.

Frequently Asked Questions

+Does a cold air intake add horsepower?

Usually a little, often in the range of 5 to 15 horsepower on gas engines, with more gain when combined with a tune. The change in sound is usually more noticeable than the change in performance.

+Oiled or dry air filter?

Oiled cotton filters flow well and can be washed and re-oiled. Dry synthetic filters are easier to clean and do not risk oil on the MAF sensor. Both are reusable.

+How often should I change a diesel fuel filter?

Follow the interval in your owner's manual, often every 10,000 to 30,000 miles. Change it sooner if you buy fuel from unfamiliar stations or see a water-in-fuel warning.
