E-Bikes, Motorcycles and How to Carry Them

Written by the PickupChain team · Last reviewed October 17, 2026

A truck and a bike or motorcycle are a great pair: drive to the trailhead, then ride. E-bikes come in classes. In most US states, Class 1 and 2 top out at 20 mph and Class 3 at 28 mph with pedaling. Local trail rules often limit which classes are allowed.

E-bikes are heavy, often 50 to 80 pounds. Choose a hitch rack rated for that weight per bike, with wheel trays rather than frame hanging. A 2-inch receiver is usually needed for two or more e-bikes.

For motorcycles and dirt bikes, use a loading ramp rated for the bike weight, wheel chocks and tie-downs that attach to solid points on the frame and bed.

Frequently Asked Questions

+Can I carry an e-bike on a regular bike rack?

Only if the rack is rated for the e-bike's weight. Many standard racks carry around 35 to 40 pounds per bike, while e-bikes often weigh 50 pounds or more. Look for racks made for e-bikes.

+How do I load a motorcycle into a truck bed?

Use a ramp rated for the bike, ideally a longer arched ramp for a gentler angle. Secure the front wheel in a chock and use soft loops and ratchet straps to anchor points on the truck bed.
