Truck Bed Upgrades: Protect, Secure and Organize

Written by the PickupChain team · Last reviewed October 17, 2026

The bed is the reason most people buy a pickup, and it takes the most abuse. Start with protection: a spray-in or drop-in bedliner or a rubber bed mat stops dents, scratches and cargo sliding around.

Next is security and weather. Tonneau covers range from soft roll-up covers to hard folding and retractable designs. Hard covers lock with the tailgate and keep tools out of sight. Bed caps and toppers give full height and enclosed storage.

Bed length is the number one fitment detail. The same truck is sold with 5.5, 6.5 and 8-foot beds, and many covers and racks also differ by whether the truck has a factory bed rail system or a 110-volt outlet in the bed.

Frequently Asked Questions

+How do I measure my truck bed length?

Measure along the bed floor from the inside of the bulkhead (front wall) to the inside of the closed tailgate. Round to the nearest common size: 5.5, 5.8, 6.5, 6.8 or 8 feet.

+Soft, hard folding or retractable tonneau cover?

Soft roll-up covers are the most affordable and lightest. Hard folding covers add security and can be walked on by small animals or snow loads. Retractable covers roll into a canister and leave the bed fully usable, but cost more and take some space at the front.

+Can I use a bed rack with a tonneau cover?

Yes, many bed racks mount to the bed rails and are designed to work with low-profile folding or retractable covers. Check that the rack and cover are listed as compatible.
