1 OfferTowing Setup: Match Every Part to the Weight
Written by the PickupChain team · Last reviewed October 17, 2026
Your setup is only as strong as its weakest part. Check four ratings before you tow: the truck's towing capacity, the hitch class, the ball mount and ball rating, and the trailer's actual loaded weight. Use the lowest number of the chain.
Hitch classes describe capacity. Class III (2-inch receiver) covers most half-ton towing up to about 8,000 pounds. Class IV and V handle more. Gooseneck and fifth wheel hitches mount in the bed and carry heavy campers and equipment trailers over the rear axle.
Trailers with electric brakes need a brake controller in the cab. Weight distribution hitches spread tongue weight across both axles and reduce sway, which matters for travel trailers.
Frequently Asked Questions
+How much tongue weight should a trailer have?
For a bumper-pull trailer, aim for 10 to 15 percent of the loaded trailer weight on the hitch. Too little tongue weight causes sway, too much overloads the rear axle. Gooseneck and fifth wheel trailers typically run 15 to 25 percent.
+Do I need a brake controller?
Most states require trailer brakes above a certain weight, often 3,000 pounds. Electric trailer brakes need a brake controller. Proportional controllers apply the trailer brakes in proportion to how hard the truck brakes and give the smoothest stops.
+4-pin or 7-pin trailer wiring?
4-pin connectors handle tail, turn and brake lights for small utility trailers. 7-pin connectors add electric brakes, reverse lights and a 12-volt charge line for campers and larger trailers.
