Exterior Upgrades: Function First, Then Looks

Written by the PickupChain team · Last reviewed October 17, 2026

Exterior parts change how a truck looks, but the best upgrades also solve a problem: running boards and nerf bars make it easier to get in, fender flares cover wider tires and keep mud off the paint, and steel bumpers add recovery points and winch mounts.

Fit matters more than style. Modern trucks have parking sensors, front cameras and radar for adaptive cruise control in the bumper and grille. Check that a bumper or grille is listed as sensor-compatible for your exact trim, otherwise driver assistance features may stop working.

Steel bumpers can add 70 to 150 pounds to the front axle. If you plan a winch as well, consider stiffer front springs or a leveling kit that accounts for the extra weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

+Running boards or nerf bars?

Running boards are wide, flat steps that run the length of the cab and are easiest for kids and passengers. Nerf bars are round or oval tubes with step pads, lighter and more off-road friendly. Rock sliders are a third option: they protect the rocker panels on the trail and double as a step.

+Do I need fender flares for bigger tires?

Many states require the tire tread to be covered by the fender. If wider tires or a low-offset wheel push the tread past the body, fender flares keep the truck legal and reduce rock chips. Check the coverage width listed for each flare.

+Will an aftermarket grille affect my front camera or radar?

It can. Many trucks place the front camera or the adaptive cruise radar in the grille emblem. Choose grilles that list a camera or radar mount for your trim.
