Electrical Upgrades: Power for Work, Camping and Safety

Written by the PickupChain team · Last reviewed October 17, 2026

Trucks run more electronics every year: light bars, fridges, compressors, cameras and chargers. Start with a healthy battery and a clean ground. Many electrical gremlins come from a weak battery or corroded connections.

Portable power stations and solar generators run laptops, fridges and tools without idling the engine. Compare usable capacity in watt-hours, continuous output in watts and the battery chemistry. LiFePO4 batteries last more charge cycles than older lithium-ion types.

For any added accessory, use a fused circuit with a relay sized for the load. Dash cams and backup cameras add safety and evidence in case of an accident.

Frequently Asked Questions

+How big a power station do I need for camping?

Add up the watts of each device multiplied by the hours you use it. A 12-volt fridge often uses 300 to 600 watt-hours per day. Many campers choose 1,000 to 2,000 watt-hours with solar recharging.

+AGM or lithium for a second battery?

AGM batteries are cheaper and work with standard charging. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries are lighter and allow deeper discharge but need a DC-DC charger to charge correctly from the alternator.

+Do I need a relay for a light bar?

Yes. A relay lets a small switch control the high current of the light bar, and an inline fuse protects the wiring. Most light bar kits include a matching harness.
