1 OfferCooling System: The Key to Towing in Summer
Written by the PickupChain team · Last reviewed October 17, 2026
Towing, hauling and slow off-road driving all add heat. A healthy cooling system keeps the engine and transmission in a safe range. Signs of trouble are a temperature gauge that climbs on hills, coolant smell, visible leaks or white residue at hose connections.
Radiators, water pumps and thermostats wear out over time. On high-mileage trucks it often makes sense to replace the thermostat, hoses and coolant together when one part fails.
If you tow regularly, an auxiliary transmission cooler is one of the best upgrades. Heat is the main cause of automatic transmission failure, and a larger cooler lowers fluid temperature significantly.
Frequently Asked Questions
+How often should I change coolant?
Most modern long-life coolants last 100,000 miles or 5 years or more, but check your owner's manual. Use the coolant type specified for your engine, as mixing types can cause deposits.
+Do I need a transmission cooler for towing?
Many trucks with a factory tow package already have one. If yours does not, or if you tow heavy trailers in hot climates or mountains, an auxiliary cooler is a worthwhile upgrade.
+Why is my truck overheating only when towing?
Common causes are a partially clogged radiator, a weak fan clutch or electric fan, low coolant or a failing water pump. Check these before blaming the engine.
