How Long Do Truck Brakes Last? Pads, Rotors and Replacement Cost
Aktualisiert am 12. Oktober 2026

Pickups are heavy, they tow and they haul, and that is hard on brakes. Here is how long pads and rotors usually last on a truck, how to tell when they are worn, and what replacing them typically costs.
How long brake pads last on a pickup
Brake pads on pickup trucks typically last between 30,000 and 70,000 miles. Trucks that tow often, drive in stop-and-go traffic or in hilly areas end up at the low end; trucks that mostly cruise on the highway can go well beyond.
Front pads usually wear faster because the front brakes do most of the stopping. On trucks that tow a lot, the rear brakes work harder and can wear sooner than expected.
- Towing and hauling: more weight means more heat and faster wear.
- Driving style: hard, late braking wears pads quickly.
- Terrain: mountains and steep grades shorten pad life.
- Pad type: semi-metallic pads handle heat better, ceramic pads last long in daily driving.
How long rotors last
Rotors often last through one or two sets of pads. They need replacing when they are below the minimum thickness stamped on the rotor, are warped (you feel a pulsating pedal or a shaking steering wheel) or deeply grooved. On trucks, many owners replace pads and rotors together to avoid doing the job twice.
Warning signs your brakes need attention
- Squealing when you brake: many pads have a wear indicator that squeals when they are thin.
- Grinding noise: the pad material may be gone and metal is touching the rotor. Stop driving and inspect right away.
- Pulsating pedal or shaking steering wheel when braking: often worn or warped rotors.
- Truck pulls to one side: possibly a sticking caliper or uneven pad wear.
- Soft or spongy pedal, or the brake warning light is on: have the system checked immediately.
What a truck brake job typically costs
Typical ranges for half-ton and mid-size pickups. Heavy-duty trucks, performance brake kits and dealer labor rates cost more. Comparing complete kits across retailers is one of the easiest ways to save on parts.
| Job (one axle) | Parts only (DIY) | Shop (parts + labor) |
|---|---|---|
| Brake pads | $40 - $150 | $150 - $350 |
| Pads + two rotors | $100 - $400 | $300 - $800 |
| Complete kit with calipers | $250 - $700 | $500 - $1,200 |
Choosing the right pads
- Ceramic: quiet, low dust, long life. Best for daily driving and light towing.
- Semi-metallic: better heat resistance and bite. Good for regular towing and hauling.
- Severe-duty / towing pads: built for heavy trailers, mountain driving and work trucks.
Before you buy
- Confirm the exact year, model, drivetrain and brake package. Rotor sizes can differ between trims of the same truck.
- Check whether you need front, rear or both axles.
- Follow the torque specs and bed in new pads as the manufacturer describes.
- Brakes are safety-critical. Have the work done by a qualified shop if you are not experienced.
